If you are planning on listing your home in the spring, here are a few easy things you can do now to get ready to impress potential buyers.

  1. CLEAN! Now I mean really clean. Go for those not-so-obvious places like the fireplace mantle, blinds and window treatments, windows inside and out, and ceiling fan blades.
  2. Declutter everything. Think empty countertops, orderly shoe racks, neatly hung jackets, no piles of clothes in the laundry, and a garage where everything is in its place.
  3. Repaint walls with neutral colors like grays, tans, or whites. Calm colors keep the eyes focused on the space instead of the walls.
  4. Depersonalize. Take down the family photos and kids drawings. Potential buyers want to be able to see the house as theirs and that can be hard to do when there are photos of other families everywhere.
  5. Think simple when it comes to home décor. Animal prints and loud colors can distract from what you really want those buyers to see.
  6. Take a look at your closets. Consider adding some shelving to create an overall neater, more organized appearance.
  7. Tackle that Honey-Do list. Tighten loose doorknobs and hinges, fix or replace leaky faucets/pipes, repaint scuffs on the walls and floors, check for squeaky doors.
  8. Do some “faux renovations.” Little tweaks make a huge difference, like replacing fixtures, faucets, hinges, and knobs, and covering older furniture with slipcovers and a throw pillow or two. Be careful not to go overboard though, busy can often be viewed as messy.
  9. Turn your bathrooms into mini-spas. Place a small stack of washcloths on the counter tied together with a pretty ribbon. Set out a mildly scented candle and some decorative soaps. Store bath items in smalls baskets with lids so they are out of site and give a warm feeling to the room.
  10. Boost that curb appeal. Trim shrubs, weed flower beds, remove and refresh any peeling paint, and add some potted plants along the walkway leading to your front door. Remember, this will be the first thing a potential buyer sees so make it warm and welcoming.
